Container number check digit calculator

Type any shipping container number to check it against the ISO 6346 standard.

Enter 4 letters and 7 digits.

How the check digit works

  1. Give each letter of the owner code a number: A is 10, B is 12, C is 13 and so on, skipping 11, 22 and 33. Digits keep their own value.
  2. Multiply each of the first ten characters by 2 raised to its position: 1, 2, 4, 8 and so on up to 512.
  3. Add the results, divide by 11 and keep the remainder. A remainder of 10 counts as 0.
  4. That remainder is the check digit. If it doesn't match the last digit painted on the box, the number was misread or mistyped.

Why it matters in the yard

One swapped digit on a clipboard means a container that's 'lost' in your system while it sits in Row C. The check digit catches most of those mistakes, but only if someone checks it. QBoss checks it on every number that carries one, automatically.
